Laura Schroeder teaches physical education at Tukes Valley Primary and was excited to learn that a bicycle and pedestrian safety program was coming to her class. The Let's Go Bicycle Education Program provides curriculum for health & physical fitness teachers, as well as access to a program facilitator, bikes and accessories.
Over a couple of weeks, the program builds upon the basics of bicycling and helps educators teach students regardless of the child’s beginning skill level. The third-grade students practiced not only riding bikes, but also how to be safe riders. Some students who initially could not ride a bike were invited to the “balance club,” where they mastered balancing without pedaling.
By the end of the two-week program, many students were riding their bikes confidently with big smiles on their faces. The Let's Go Bicycle Education Program is a statewide school-based program supported with funding from Washington's Climate Commitment Act, Washington State Department of Transportation, Cascade Bicycle Club and Educational Service District 112.
