Battle Ground students demonstrate science knowledge at Elementary Science Olympiad

More than 140 elementary students from 10 schools and six school districts competed in the Elementary Science Olympiad at River HomeLink on Nov. 19. Four teams from Battle Ground schools placed in the top five.

Daybreak Primary placed fifth in Floating Foils, which tested students’ understanding of displacement as they worked to enable a barge to withstand added mass.

River HomeLink placed third in Toppling Towers, using concepts from geometry to produce a taller and more stable tower.

The team from River HomeLink also placed fourth in Glorious Gliders. Students used concepts from aerodynamics for length of flight and geometry for launching.

Tukes Valley Primary’s team placed fifth in Bamboozling Boxes, which incorporated math, technical writing, metric estimation (mass and dimensions) and cross-disciplinary language arts skills (using appropriate adjectives).

Their teachers are Lisel Johnson, Gina Lemberg, Jean Potter-Openshaw and Trisha Simmons, Daybreak Primary; Rachel Karlsen, River HomeLink; and Diane Hatfield and Pamela Hull, Tukes Valley Primary.
